Mineral resources of any country contribute maximum for the economic growth of any country. Mining industry is associated and is solely responsible for the exploration and excavation of these resources. Even though mining industry is an essential activity for the growth of any country, this activity is associated with the creation of many environmental problems and hence mining industry is considered as an essential evil. Many of these problems can be avoided, if during conceptual stage of the mining project, adequate environmental control considerations are thought of. Once the mining activities are set up, it becomes very costly to install pollution control measures and implement other environmental control measures, if the same is not considered in the conceptual stage.
Mining industry exerts both positive and negative environmental impacts. Negative impacts cause environmental degradation. It is the responsibility of Mining Engineers, and Environmentalists to document these impacts separately so that these can be identified and attempts may be made to minimize negative impacts and maximize the positive impacts for better development with least environmental degradation. Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Environmental Management Plan (EMP) have been considered as the most important tools / documents which can be utilized by the project proponent and Government Regulating Agencies and the Public to clearly understand the environmental implications of the proposed mining project with respect to sustained development and to take decisions in the interest of environment and the national economy. It also helps to analyze the techno-environmental feasibility of the proposed project.
The most important and common use of Iron ore is in the Steel making Industries. Steel plants are the backbone of any country's development, especially for a developing country like India as it is important for all infrastructure development in the country; its utilization needs to be optimized. Iron & steel industries are normally heavy industries & they need massive amount of raw material. Iron ore is the principal raw material along with cooking coal and limestone. As per estimation, currently steel production in the country is gradually growing up.
This mine is situated in the district of Mayurbhanj i.e Bamanghati subdivision where tribal population is more than 80%. The climatic condition & soil is not so suitable for agriculture. There is no source of engagement for this tribal people and their living condition is very poor. Sometimes they go outside in search of work to support their family. There is only mining activities in this reason & no industries/plants to provide source of income to the local people. They purely depend on the mining activities only to maintain their lively hood.
This has necessitated the production of raw materials to cater the demand and also these value added product will fetch more revenue to the state as well as to the country as a whole.
